Edifier R1280DB Multimedia Speakers Review

I have tried, tested and reviewed a number of Edifier speakers over the years (portable, bookshelf and soundbar) and have always found them to be of excellent sound and build quality. After trying the new R1280DB multimedia bookshelf speakers, I think I have found my new favourites. They look sleek and understated and the sound is perfect.

The Edifier R1280DB multimedia speakers are amplified active bookshelf speakers that can used by a wired connection (3.5mm to RCA, 3.5mm AUX, Optical/Coaxial) or wireless Bluetooth connection. They feature the controls on the side of the active/powered speaker and by the small wireless remote control.

The have a total power output of 42w RMS, so are more than loud enough for home/office use and have a crystal-clear sound (even at high volume).

Setting up was very easy. They connect together via normal speaker cable (approximately 2.5m cable supplied) and then by cable option or Bluetooth, your choice. I first chose to connect via Bluetooth as I don’t like cables all over the place.

For the Bluetooth connection, I used my tablet. Pairing the devices was simple, straightforward, painless and connected first time. For first use, I decided to watch a film and for the full length of the film the sound was clear and didn’t lose connection. The sound was of a high quality and filled the room without being overbearing or distorted. Very impressive, but then I have found that on all the Edifier speakers I have tried.

Next, I tried them on my laptop, this time connecting with the 3.5mm RCA cable, and again the sound was perfect.

While the active speaker has the controls on the side for power on/off, volume, treble and bass it is much easier to use the remote. The remote is small and slim and fits neatly into the palm of your hand. It has 12 buttons to control power, volume, play, pause, forward, rewind and input selection (you can change input source at the touch of a button, so can switch between Bluetooth or wired connection easily). The remote is very lightweight and comfortable to hold.

Overall, I am very impressed with the Edifier R1280DB speakers. They look great in black and have removable grills. They are very easy to set up and control and the variety of connection options is great with the Bluetooth option fantastic (you can connect your phone, tablet or other Bluetooth device). Despite looking great, the sound is excellent and would be a great addition to a shelf or desk.
