Sunday Afternoons began life in Oregon back in the 1980s, when their founders created their first weatherproof “Adventure Blanket” to bring along on family days spent down by the lake. Soon, they began selling the blankets at local craft fairs, before then deciding to make sun hats from the leftover fabric scraps. And just like that, Sunday Afternoons was born.

Sunday Afternoons remains very much a family business, with over a hundred styles of sun hats and accessories, and even some winter options, too. Each hat is designed to help people make the most of every day spent out in nature – a love for which is at the heart of everything they do.

I was gifted the cruiser hat from Sunday Afternoons to review, it arrived in a recyclable box which I felt could have been a lot shallower as the hat is only a couple of centimetres in depth as it packs flat.

I was happy to see I had been given the sand/black colour in a size large (58cm – 60.5cm) as requested, it also comes in a medium size (56cm – 58cm) with other colour choices of cream/sand, olive terrain and quarry.

If you are not sure of your size there is a handy size guide on the website along with a video on how to measure your head correctly.

The hat is ultra lightweight weighing 3.7 ounces/104.9 grams, its main body is made from 100% nylon, the mesh strip is 100% polyester, it looks and feels very well structured, the brim measures 2¾” front and side brim, 3½” back brim, it has a floatable foam core with poly brim wire, giving you the ability to tweak style if required.

It gives good coverage of your face and neck from the sun and with it being well structured it doesn’t flop.

The hat’s crown has a mesh ventilation strip, there is a half head adjustable pull cord elastic to adjust sizing, then between crown and brim an inner sweat band trim which should hopefully avoid sweat staining.

The handy chin strap is a black soft edged fabric therefore it should not irritate or chaff as well as keeping it secured to your head on a windy day, this is easily adjusted with the sliding cord lock.

The hat is water and stain repellent, it has a UPF 50+ Certified Sun Rating which makes this a fantastic hat for any occasion such as hiking, fishing, gardening or other outdoor activities.

Washing and care instructions: Hand wash cold, line dry. Do not bleach, iron, or dry clean. Pack flat, it is advised not to fold or crease due to the wire.

Sunday Afternoons claim their hats are built to see you through a lifetime of adventures. That’s why each one comes with a Lifetime Guarantee.

Sunday Afternoons statement is diminish the sun, but never the fun.

Overall this is a fantastic hat at a great price and would make a great gift for any occasion such as a birthday or Father’s Day.
