What do you get when you combine the music of the South African choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the moves of the Royal Ballet and contemporary dance company Rambert? You get ‘Inala’ an incredible fusion unlike anything you have experienced before.

Last night I visited the New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham for the opening night of Inala, a Zulu ballet. The New Alexandra is a city central theatre easy accessible by train and bus with the nearest car park less than two minutes away. The theatre is full of old time charm, clean and tidy and the staff were some of the most helpful I have ever come across. The only real issue we saw was that some of the seats had limited view of the stage and a few people were asking to move and the leg room was a little tight. The theatre may look a little dated from the outside but this does not take anything away from the quality of performances it hosts.

Inala means abundance of goodwill in Zulu and it is aptly named as I left the show last night full of energy and exhilaration. I wasn’t alone if the standing ovation the show received is anything to go by.

The harmony of voices from the incredible singers from Ladysmith Black Mambazo swept you to place far away. The dancers combined grace and strength to completely mesmerize you, I was lost within the world of Inala within the first few minutes.

Without giving too much away I will tell you that Inala takes you on a journey. A journey completely unique to you, the composition and choreography creates something not seen before; exhilarating, intoxicating and simply breathtaking.

The music, the voices, the dance all stirs up powerful emotions from deep within you. I left the theatre feeling empowered and inspired.

I absolutely loved Inala, the time flew by so quickly and I really didn’t want it to end. If I had to rate it out of 5 it would easily get full marks. I truly had a wonderful evening and highly recommend Inala to all.

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
