I went along to the Royal & Derngate on Monday 27th March to see the musical Sister Act, starring Alexandra Burke and directed by Craig Revel Horwood. We found the theatre fairly easily and found it a very impressive theatre in central Northampton. We parked easily and took to our seats in good time for the show to start.
Having seen the film many many times I was full of anticipation for the show, I hadn’t realised Alexandra Burke was in the starring role playing Deloris Van Cartier. Wow, does she play it. The girl can act, the girl can dance, and the girl sure can sing! She is amazing. She sure is the star of the show but all credit to the whole cast… I thought they were all stars. Mother Superior, played by Karen Mann had a stunning voice, I was blown away.
Genius casting as the nun’s all looked like those from the film, they all had amazing energy and huge grins, they all appeared to be having an absolute ball up there on the stage. The dancing the singing and the acting … fab-u-lous. There was great comedy timing between the guys, Curtis, Pablo, Joey and TJ. Eddie was also a gem. The show was fast paced and kept to the story with Deloris hiding out in a convent having witnessed a crime.
The set was impressive as were the costumes. All the singing was superb but I especially enjoyed when they all sang together and I have to say Sister Mary Patrick had an awesome voice. They all did, it was funny, touching, we were clapping and dancing along lots during the show. When the nun’s all came out with sparkly habits they looked amazing. It’s everything you want from a musical and wouldn’t have looked out of place in the West End. The standing ovation was richly deserved and the finale was fantastic. When Deloris came down the lit-up staircase in her dazzling white dress it was amazing.
My only teeny teeny grumble… where was the song… I Will Follow Him? I was sure it would be in there! This show is a definite must see, Alexandra Burke is a must see, Sister Act… go see it, you will love it.
