You’ll be hard pushed to find ‘a woman of a certain age’, who doesn’t adore the film Dirty Dancing and I am no exception, and, whilst visiting the theatre is always a pleasure I was literally bursting with excitement to experience this 80s iconic classic, that has been transformed in to a record-breaking international stage musical, in the flesh!!
The theatre performance did not disappoint and truly reflects the original film. The scenery changes were fast paced, yet seamless and, in my opinion, did a great job at drawing the audience in. Integrating the original soundtrack also added to the nostalgia.
The overall standard of acting was very good, I was particularly impressed with Katie Hartland (Baby) and Carlie Milner (Penny Johnson), boy, can that woman dance! Lewis Griffiths played ‘Johnny’ well (let’s be honest, Patrick Swayze is a hard act to follow!). I also have to mention the superb vocals from Daniele Pobega and Michael Kent.
My overall verdict, Dirty Dancing has great acting and equally great dancing, particularly the closing routine, which was amazing!! A real, feel good, theatre show featuring 35 hits songs… We definitely had the time of our lives!! You’ll not be disappointed!!
