I was lucky enough to be chosen to review Shirley Valentine at Milton Keynes Theatre last night.
Getting to the theatre is very easy as there are signs guiding you whichever area you are coming from. Directly outside the theatre there are a lot of parking spaces, which are free after 6.00pm. We were greeted at the theatre entrance by friendly staff selling programmes for the show. Once inside the theatre we made our way to the Piano Bar to pick up our tickets. The bar was busy with people not only buying drinks but also sitting and eating meals. It has a lovely atmosphere in there.
After collecting out tickets we made our way into the auditorium and were quickly shown to our seats. It filled up very quickly and we had a lovely view of the stage. At just after 7.30 ‘Shirley Valentine’ (Jodie Prenger) came on stage, which was set in her kitchen in Liverpool in the 80’s. She had us all laughing as she re-lived the Shirley Valentine story, talking to the wall, drinking wine and even cooking on stage, wondering how she ever found herself in this rut of mid-life. She mentions her family and friends especially her best friend Jane who offers to take her away to Greece for 2 weeks holiday. The accent and one-liners are hilarious in the build up to the interval.
After a 20 minute interval ‘Shirley Valentine’ came back on stage, but this time in Greece and having the time of her life after leaving her mundane life in Liverpool behind her. Once again, the story was as entertaining as the first half and she had everybody laughing with her one-liners.
I really enjoyed the show but was surprised that she was the only person in it. She impressed me and the people around me that she remembered the whole story. I would recommend a visit if you get the chance and would give the show 4/5 stars.
Tickets cost from £15 to £42 (plus £2.85 transaction fee).
