This musical is based on the movie ‘Sister Act’ which was a smash hit in the 1990’s. The movie starred Whoopi Goldberg who is a producer of the show, along with Craig Revel Horwood who is also a producer and director of the show.

When singer, Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder by a gangster, the police hide her as a nun in a traditional convent where she has trouble fitting in. She begins to transform the dreadful choir and rearranges them to make them better singers.

Having seen the film Sister Act several weeks ago, I want to stress that the musical does not follow the film very closely. The music in the film is reminiscent of the 60’s where the film has more of a 70’s feel of soul… I did not recognize any of the songs in the musical as being in the film, but the most memorable and catchy tune was the most memorable song being ‘Take me to heaven’.

The nuns in the musical are funny and not as conservative as in the film.

There were some huge fans in the audience who dressed up as nuns for a girl’s night out.

The standout performance of the evening was Alexandra Burke, one of the most successful winners of the X factor with amazing vocals! As a huge Burke fan, I enjoyed her performance and her voice has an incredible range.

Many of the cast members played several roles (this is common in musicals) however, at times it was a bit too obvious such as when male cast members played gangster members along with the nuns, or when one of the leads Curtis (with a large Afro) the mobster later played a camp individual.

Overall this is a production that was enjoyable but I personally preferred the music from the film.

The New Wimbledon Theatre itself is lovely and conveniently located less than a 5 minute walk from Wimbledon Overground/Underground station with plenty to do in the area.
