Saturday Night Fever on a cold and blustery Tuesday night at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow. With parking just a few minutes walk away we walked towards the theatre and it was all lit up to show the stunning new foyer, with its beautiful spiral staircase. There were lots of murmurs of approval from the clientele. We were greeted with a very warm welcome as we walked through the door and collected our tickets. The foyer and all other areas were very spacious and spotless. We headed to our seats in the Dress Circle and were happy with our great seats with more than ample leg room and a fantastic view of the stage and prepared to enjoy the show ahead. The lights went down and we were suddenly transferred to 70s New York.

Anyone looking for a happy, clappy, show full of sweetness and light had come to the wrong show. This was real, real issues that are still relevant today, grit, torment with real family issues, from drug taking and unemployment to suicide and everything in between.

Seeing the life of young Tony Manero, working away in a store selling paint so he could afford to go to the club and dance because it was something he felt passionate about. Seeing him practice for the big competition and meeting Stephanie (the uptown girl who thought she was too good for him). Seeing him cope with day to day life and the part his friends played in his life.

The settings on the stage were fantastic and that the use of 3 cubes of scenery that could transform from his home, to the club, to the Brooklyn Bridge. The costumes were brilliant to see and amazing how many of them are now back in fashion. There were some fantastic musicians, singers and actors who were totally inspiring.

I sat gobsmacked throughout. The musical numbers, I knew by heart, the dancing made me want to jump to my feet and join in. The predominantly young cast left me breathless, with every scene. This stage show has the same grittiness that you find in Blood Brothers.

I loved the show and the music, but you know there can be no happy ending. 5/5 for this amazing show brought to life and its fantastic cast. Definitely recommended.
