Queen II at The Hawth Crawley Review

Queen II – a show I have been eagerly waiting for. Being a fan of the original band and their music, I was a little dubious that the tribute act would compare but I hoped at least that I would be entertained.

As we turned up at The Hawth in Crawley, it was heaving with people attending the show. Luckily the car park is of an ample size, so parking wasn’t a problem. It’s also free which is great. There was a huge queue for the bar but they have a separate cafe, so drinks were easily purchased. Our seats were in the very top of the theatre as the show was nearly sold out. The one thing I like about The Hawth in particular is that there is no restrictive view. Wherever you sit you get a good view of the stage. The show started but unfortunately the four-piece tribute act started off with a fewer of the lesser known or popular songs. I am not sure if it was the acoustics in the auditorium or if “Freddie’s” voice needed warming up, but it didn’t reach the top parts of the theatre very well. Unfortunately, this led to a few patrons in the top tier getting a little bored and they decided to make their own entertainment much to the annoyance of everyone else sitting around them. Sadly, it was very hard to hear and concentrate on the band throughout the first half. As the interval approached the ushers came in and dealt with the situation in a polite and professional manner and the people were asked to leave. A sense of relief was felt from the people around the top section as it meant they could now enjoy the rest of the show. So, thank you to those members of staff for acting on behalf of the rest of the audience.

The second half of the show started, and it didn’t disappoint. Freddy strutted his stuff around the stage in a manner that would have made Freddy Mercury himself smile. With songs like “Crazy little thing called love, Radio Ga Ga and Bohemian Rhapsody” they had the crowd on their feet clapping, singing and dancing away. The audience reaction to ‘Fat bottom girls‘ was fantastic with the majority of the females in the audience shaking their many different sized bottoms.

‘I want to break free‘ was a personal highlight for me with Freddy dressing up as a woman singing away with his hoover.

The show ended with two iconic Queen songs ‘We will rock you‘ and ‘We are the Champions’. So, the show ended on a real high. The band that supported Freddy on stage portraying Brian May et al were great musicians who really have honed their craft of the particular instruments that they play. I wouldn’t say that the Freddy last night was a match on the late great Freddy Mercury but who is?? But if you want a good night out, with great music and entertainment then I would definitely go along.
