I went with my best friend to see Patrick Monahan’s Cake Charmer Tour at The Studio in Bradford.

The show stated on time and was opened Patrick Monahan introducing himself – he then bounded out from behind the curtain and started dancing, he did it quite well although comical. There was some audience participation too which was hilarious. When the music stopped he came into the audience hugging random people and waving and acknowledging the others.

The first half was lots of interaction with the audience, finding out where people were from, what kind of things they liked/jobs they had etc… There was a good mix of young/old, friends, couples, parents with teen children etc… He managed to pull out people and make very quick witted jokes/comebacks, he did it in a good way thought that wouldn’t have made them feel awkward/intimidated (I have witnessed a few cringe worthy moments in previous comedy shows which were quite embarrassing). I loved the flashback moments which showed the difference between technology today and how it was back in the 80’s.

The first half seemed to be over really quickly but when I looked at the time we had been in there over an hour. He even came into the bar area during the interval to mingle and chat which was nice.

The second half started and that’s when “cake” came into it. He was still as full of energy as he was in the first half and looked like he was really enjoying it as much as we were. There was lots more laughing and audience interaction which was probably more comical than the first half. He did a really good job of pulling it all together and linking everybody in throughout the show. Before we knew it the performance was coming to an end which was very hilariously finished off with 2 members of the audience (I take my hat off to you Alex – you’re moves were amazing!) taking part.

I would love to go see Patrick Monahan again, firstly because it was such an amazing night and secondly to see how he would manage to bring the performance to the same ending with a completely different audience.

Thanks for a brilliant show and remember YOLO (I’m sooo with it now!)  😀
