What a great little pub. Great décor, lit up throughout with candles. A warm entrance and welcome by the delightful staff.
Now this menu is something a little bit different at first glance I wasn’t sure what I was going to choose as nothing of my usual choice was on there. Crackling being my absolute favourite was brought to our table whilst we decided what to order. Perfectly crunchy and served with an excellent puréed apple sauce.
The delightful waiter selected us a very fragrant wine which went down well with the crackling.
To start my friend had the pate which was served with melba toasts which she opted out of after seeing my freshly house baked soda bread. I had their very own “Mall” oaked smoked salmon which I have got to say is the very best I have ever tasted. Cut slightly thicker than usual it had a very aromatic taste and served completely nude and wedge of lemon I tasted with out and the taste was amazing I added the lemon and some pepper as that’s what I like but it was perfectly delightful, plenty of butter on the soda bread I could have eaten another round.
The mains were as I said out of the usual Collette had the chicken kiev but it wasn’t as it sounded, served on a bed of potato roti it had an unusual flavour of which I would have described as an Indian spice which accompanied the chicken perfectly. I had the fillet of veal which I have never tried before as I think I looked after some baby calves as a child and didn’t really want to be eating them but with no other meat choice other than pie I thought I’d give it ago. It was amazing the succulent texture and taste of the veal was outstanding served with sheep’s feet (a mushroom), black cabbage and baby roasted parsnips I enjoyed every mouthful.
Dessert is where it was a little let down for us. Although the cheeses were amazing somehow the nuts in the dessert biscuits made their way in to the smoker and they didn’t quite taste as they should but the waiter when trying some told us they don’t normally taste like that and we had a laugh and a joke.
We were later shown around the pub to find a quaint garden area with pretty trellises and mood set lighting. Upstairs they have an amazing banqueting area which for £50 for the evening is a catch. They also have evenings where you can dine in the kitchen area with a non menu and eat what the chefs bring to the table which they can cater for up to 12 people which I can imagine would be a fun start to a hen do evening or such.
Overall a great place to eat and I was intrigued by the kitchen dining and may be taking some colleagues for the kitchen entertainment for the Christmas celebrations.
