Let me tell you about “Lighting up the Night”—such a delightful little book! A gentle reminder of how important our natural world is. An enchanting story filled with magical illustrations by a most talented Ukrainian artist, completed during war torn times. I absolutely love wildlife and this book offers everything that I want to share with the children in my life. A great opportunity to introduce them to all nature has to offer and to excite them about going out into the world to experience them.

The author says “ I started writing because I am absolutely passionate about our natural world and I am deeply concerned that it is suffering so much! Children are the most important to teach. They are our next generation and it’s imperative that we get the message across to them”

And this book also gives a great big cheer for that natural world around us, reminding us to love and appreciate even the smallest of insects and creatures. The characters are fun, the story follows them wanting to organise a party, and they have all they need except one thing! They go on a journey together making friends along the way and learning, without realising a big, sparkly message for all. To never, ever judge by appearances. Sometimes the tiniest, most unimpressive little critter can surprise you and do the most amazing things!

It’s especially great if you have a teeny tiny little one who is feeling a bit lonely or insignificant, or for those big ones who need to embrace and include their younger, smaller siblings or school friends.

Perfectly aimed for 4 to 8 year olds, where some reading along with adults is still required. I read it to my friend’s little girl and she fell in love with glow worms, so much so she wants to go off to find some at the weekend. It’s just the right length and content to keep the kids interested, and then some with naming all the wildlife and animals in each illustration.

The illustrations are wonderful bringing the furriness and friendliness of the characters to life. So beautifully detailed. Some of the pages are packed full of different animals and plant life. We had lots of fun going through each one of them and giving them names. My favourite is when they meet the bunnies who have the prettiest eyes, and the fluffy fox tails! The animals are the main characters but the nature around them is perfectly depicted also, from petals to berries.

At the end of the book there is a fab information section about bugs being on the decline in the UK and conservation tips.

Lighting Up the Night is available from The Book Guild at £7.99 and is well worth it, packed full of illustrations, a lovely journey and learning all in one go. A new age parable. Paperback and fabulous quality, just the right size for the little one on your knee to joint hold or for you to hold as you enjoy reading it to them.
