Well, who would have thought that we were coming into summer with the amount of rain we have had recently? We have been putting away our lightweight summer jackets and trying to dig out our waterproof hooded coats that we thought wouldn’t see the light of day for another couple of months yet. I know we usually expect a bit of rain during June and the rest of summer, but what we have had recently has been horrendous.
This is when I discovered that my youngest daughter has had yet another growth spurt and her winter coat is now too small for her. So, we have now had to hunt for a new coat, well before winter, to keep her dry now as well as still being suitable for the winter months. The coat had to be practical, warm, keep her dry and, as with all 7-year-old girls, look stylish. What we found was the Joules Raindrop Waterproof Coat, from Houghton Country. It is plastered with one of her favourite things at the moment – UNICORNS!
The coat is navy in colour with pastel coloured hand-drawn unicorns all over it. It is available is several sizes from age 3 to 12 years. We ordered 9-10 years/134-40cm, it is slightly too big now but we got a size up so it will be perfect for starting school in September, as well as through to next spring. And as it is navy blue, our school uniform policy will allow it (some schools don’t allow bold and bright colours).
I have already mentioned that it is waterproof, but it is also fleeced lined so it will keep her very warm – especially when the wind kicks up. Made of 100% polyester, it is zip fastening and has taped seams, a hood, pockets and, of course, the gorgeous unicorns print.
It is safe to say that my daughter loves the coat, as do all of her friends. She says it is warm and comfortable, and of course covered in pretty unicorns. So is it practical?
The fleece lining in the body and hood is thick and warm, so will definitely keep her warm during the Autumn/Winter months. For most young children, misplacing gloves is a constant theme, but this coat has poppers on its fleece lined pockets, this will hopefully ensure that her gloves remain with her coat for longer.
The hood is not detachable, which we prefer as we have lost countless detachable hoods over the years, and fits very well with a taped seam. This is also fleeced lined, so keeps her head nice and cosy.
There is a zip cover at the top to ensure that the zipper doesn’t catch on her chin, which is a great idea.
The sizing is good – it is a good length being thigh length so there are no gaps, meaning no cold tummy or back in cold weather, and no riding up when playing. The sleeves are also a good length and I can see that it will be perfect come autumn (we got a size up ready for winter).
The stitching is very good and sturdy, including around the hood and the sleeve cuffs.
It is machine washable and needs reshaping while it is damp, it cannot be tumble dried or ironed.
The Joules Unicorn Waterproof Coat is a really nice design (looks a lot better in the flesh than the website pictures give it credit for – the unicorns are a light brighter and look more colourful) and the quality really does shine through. It does exactly what a winter cost should do, keeping my daughter warm and dry! You can see and feel the quality in this coat.
