Scottish Ballet have expertly spun a twist on the Brothers Grimm classic fairy tale Hansel & Gretel which follows the story of a poverty-stricken brother and sister who, while looking for their friends, end up lost in the forest where they are sent into a deep sleep by a Witch who then entices them into her edible Gingerbread house where she traps them for her own enjoyment. The children try and escape where a scuffle ensues which results in the Witch’s own demise and the release of all the children she had captured.

Christopher Hampson’s choreography, the Scottish Ballet orchestra (conducted by Richard Honner), and the highly talented dancers bring the story to life – from the bumbling drunk father (Christopher Harrison) and the earnest Hansel (Constant Vigier) and Gretel (Kayla-Maree Tarantolo) to the Westside Story style gang of Ravens, the dancers were enchanting and effortless. A special mention must be made to the two Rag Doll performers whose piece was very skilled and humorous (Sophie Laplane and Jamiel Laurence).

The costume and stage design were outstanding! The clever use of scenery and props, my favourite being the gingerbread house scene, with plates upon plates of cakes and delicious delicacies where our stars had a mini food fight with cream, and the minute sparkling details on the Witch’s dress, meant the stage was a sight to behold!

With a performance time of just under 2 hours the show would be the ideal introduction for first time Ballet go-ers and will enchant both adults and children alike.

Taking place at the iconic Theatre Royal in Glasgow, the theatre is easily accessible by underground, bus, train or car, with parking readily available nearby. Ideally situated in the centre of Glasgow, there are an array of bars and restaurants within 5 minutes walking distance to enjoy before or after the performance.

A wonderful evening out for all ages!
