My 3 and a half year old daughter and I went to see Goldilocks and the 3 Bears at The Civic in Barnsley. The Civic is centrally located in the town centre; just a couple minutes walk away from the train and bus stations with an abundance of car parking nearby. The venue itself is very modern and light with excellent facilities and friendly staff.
The run time of the show was approximately an hour which was perfect for my daughter’s age. I wouldn’t say the story was an exact copy of the traditional fairy tale but it does follow the general idea. It’s certainly not a traditional show/panto as it seemed to be performed by only two very talented actors and had an unusual but very detailed compact set. The Mummy and Daddy Bear costumes were also very detailed and unique, with Baby Bear being a puppet. I did wonder how the puppetry would come across but the set was built to accommodate it and at times it was easy to forget you were watching a puppet.
The show was set to a background of continuous atmospheric music and contained plenty of light comedy and audience participation. My daughter loved shouting out to Daddy Bear and especially enjoyed it when he came into the audience. The star of show is a very flexible handstand performing, rope swinging, tree climbing, acrobatic Goldilocks – certainly not how I’ve ever seen the character portrayed before!
My daughter was enchanted throughout the show and has talked about it non stop since we got home; that has to be the sign of a successful performance.
