Giovanni Pernice is back in theatres for his fourth tour, this time with his new show This Is Me.
The Wyvern Theatre audience was made up of everyone from the young to those young at heart and this is a real testament to the likeability factor that Giovanni brings that has helped make him a fan favourite during his years on Strictly Come Dancing.
Giovanni started the show by giving us a glimpse of what it’s like for him to get ready before a performance in his dressing room. His half dressed appearance causing much delight from many members of the excited audience. He was helped to get dressed on stage and emerged in top hat and tails looking very sophisticated and ready to perform a dazzling dance number with the cast of professional dancers to the beautiful song Pure Imagination, reminding us just how magical the world of ballroom dancing can be.
This show isn’t all glitz and glamour though as Giovanni is very self-deprecating and brings plenty of laughs with his witty anecdotes and his regular reminders that as yet he still hasn’t had the pleasure of lifting the coveted Strictly glitter ball. In his own words he is sadly “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” this of course gains him a lot of sympathy from the audience.
Joining him on this tour and his partner for many of the dances during the night is new strictly pro dancer Nancy Xu who stuns us not only with her amazing costume changes but with her flawless footwork and passionate dancing. Husband and wife team Jonathan & Oksana Platero are also amongst the talented cast of dancers who wow us throughout the show during the choreography with their jaw dropping lifts and tricks.
A favourite part of the show for me was the audience participation where two members of the audience were picked to join Giovanni on stage and learn to Vogue. A lovely reminder of his recent celebrity partner Michelle Visage and the dance they performed during their time on Strictly.
Giovanni is full of cheeky charm and really makes This Is Me a fun show to watch. We get to see his skills as a drummer during a tribute to one of his idols Freddie Mercury including dances to We Will Rock You and Another One Bites the Dust.
From a beautiful ballroom to the heat of a Havana nightclub and everything in between this is a show that surprises and entertains throughout. The whole audience were on their feet dancing and singing for the final song This Is Me, the empowering anthem from The Greatest Showman and as the show came to a close the talented cast of dancers were rewarded with a well-deserved standing ovation.
This was my first time visiting the Wyvern Theatre and I would definitely return. Despite the nearest car park being full when we arrived there was still ample parking to be found within walking distance but I would definitely advise that you remember to factor this into your journey time.
I found the theatre staff to be very friendly and helpful and the seats in the theatre are comfortable with good views of the stage from all sections.
The This Is Me tour runs till the end of June and has had many sell out nights already so I would definitely recommend getting a ticket while you still can.
