Opening night of Ghost the Musical at the Princess Theatre in Torquay was a triumph. Right from the start the audience were entertained by memorable performances by all.

The film, Ghost, was and is a favourite of mine and I was just a little concerned that a musical would not be able to carry the story of eternal love onto a stage setting. I was so pleased to be wrong.

The story is based on two lovers, Sam, a Banker, and Molly, a Potter, moving into their first home together in Brooklyn. They are so happy and life seems too wonderful for words. Coming home late one night from a Gallery Exhibition they are mugged and Sam is shot. Molly is distraught but Sam has unfinished business and returns as a ghost. He discovers that his banker friend Carl has been using his accounts at work to launder drug money. He arranged the mugging to access Sam’s wallet and passwords to move the cash.

In order to speak to Molly, as a ghost, Sam needs a go between. He chooses a medium called Ode Mae but she is astonished to find that she can hear his voice. At first Molly doesn’t believe anything that Oda Mae says but she is convinced by the use of their private words.

Portraying ghosts throughout the show involves some cleverly designed illusions by Richard Pinner. The set, designed by Mark Bailey was also excellent. I particularly enjoyed the subway scenes with a magical performance by Garry Lee Netley.

Jacqui Dubois was an incredible Oda Mae adding energy and much humour to the performance. Her rendition of “Are you a believer” was a delight.

Carolyn Maitland as Molly and Andy Moss who played Sam were both excellent. I loved their duets and was amazed by their vocal range. Their scene at the end was very moving.

Sam Ferriday, as the evil Carl, played and sang his part very well. His death scene was particularly enjoyable.

I thoroughly enjoyed my evening at the lovely Princess Theatre. The audience did too, resulting in an enthusiastic standing ovation. I am sure that if you see this wonderful show you will love it too.
