Feed your Family for £70 a week with Aldi Review

I used to live in Germany whilst at university and ALDI was my go-to supermarket due to living on such a tight budget. Now I have 3 children – 3 year old twin sons and a 10 year old daughter. We have around £50-70 food budget a week and so eating healthily within that budget is of vital importance. I am following Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, so I tend to cook a lot of meals from scratch with fresh ingredients.

On this particular week I decided to plan what I would cook and write a full shopping list. I was over the moon to spend just under £70 and get so much meat. Meat items were a whole chicken, some 5% fat beef mince, a joint of pork, rump steak and chicken legs and thighs. Fresh items included some pre-packed casserole vegetables which I make the yummiest vegetable soup from, mushrooms, courgettes, carrots, onions, tomatoes, grapes, bananas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, baby potatoes and satsumas or clementines. Chilled items included fromage frais, sandwich ham, cheese and milk. Frozen items included some mixed vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and cheese & tomato deep pan pizzas. We also bought some cookie cereal, eggs, tinned spaghetti, tomato ketchup, baked beans and both white and wholemeal bread.

By buying all of these items we could enjoy a number of lovely breakfasts. My daughter and twins tend to go for Cookie Crunch most days but they will have toast on the odd occasion. I really enjoy beans on wholemeal toast, scrambled egg or brushetta. The other adult in our household is more of a cereal person. Our lunches ranged from fresh soup made from the casserole vegetables to cheese and ham toasties. Main meals that week were rump steak, pepper sauce and chips made from scratch in the air fryer, chicken casserole, cottage pie, chicken and pork roast dinners. We also had egg, beans and homemade chips one day.

We tend to drink chilled tap water in our household, but we do keep a bottle of ALDI no added squash on hand and a couple of bottles of cola.

Snacks tend to be fruit as I encourage my children to have their 5 a day. We also keep in a multi pack of crisp type snacks for them to have for lunch on weekends or as a week day after school treat.

I was delighted to have done a huge shop which actually lasted around 10 days and still come in under budget for the week. That said, I did have to go and purchase some additional vegetables, bread and milk later in the week, so next time I do the challenge I will try and come in at more around £60, which will leave £10 for a small additional shop.

Things which I found really useful as a busy mum working around 2 very small children. My slow cooker, air fryer and soup maker are an absolute godsend. The meals come out of the slow cooker cooked to perfection. I can pop it on and get on with other chores. The soup maker is fantastic. I prefer my soup smooth, but you can opt not to blend it and leave it chunky. My airfryer is my favourite item I think in the whole house. It makes cooking chips from scratch so easy and healthy.

I would recommend ALDI for convenience, helpful staff, quality items and how cost effective it is and to help make the most of your food shopping Aldi offering some great recipes on their website.
