Edinburgh Zoo is set upon a hill with lots of displays of animals and the most famous are the pandas which require booking to see them on display. They do the penguin parade everyday, as long as the penguins want to take part, and have lots of other interactive displays.

Currently the zoo is undergoing renovation works of the old sea lion enclosure which means that some of the zoo looks a bit like a building site, however that did not have much impact on our day out. I went with my partner and 17month old twins to visit the zoo for the first time since I was a child and although a lot has changed it was a great day. We were lucky enough to see the pandas, although they were sleeping at the time.

There is plenty of parking at the zoo, which at the time of going was £4. I thought that the zoo catered for prams/wheelchairs well; however there are a few displays that wheelchair users may have so difficulty seeing due to the steep slopes. We really enjoyed the fact that the twins could see the animals while in the pram as there are gaps in the fencing to look through.

The catering facilities were good; we spoke with several members of staff who were more than happy to give information on the animal as well as several students who were observing the animal’s behaviour. Everyone who worked at the zoo was friendly and welcoming.

We visited grasslands for a coffee and to feed the twins and there was plenty of clean highchairs with ample space for my double buggy. I would definitely recommend going to the zoo; however I felt that my twins were too young to fully appreciate seeing the animals. I did find that the gift shop was rather expensive and glad that my children are not at the age of asking for things from the gift shop.

I would give the zoo a 4 out of 5 however as entry to the zoo is expensive – 2 adults and 2 children costing £49.50 (if booked online, under 3’s are free), but I would visit again but it would be a holiday treat and not a regular trip.

Rating: 4/5
