Based on the 2001 film, this award-winning musical follows American sorority girl Elle Woods, who joins Harvard Law School in an attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner who claimed she wasn’t ‘serious’ enough. What transpires in Elle’s quest of unrequited love is a unique take on the law, a new romance and Elle staying true to herself through difficult times. When the show first transferred from Broadway, the show won 4 What’s on Stage Awards in the UK, and 3 Olivier Awards.

The role of Elle is played by X-factor finalist Lucie Jones who also represented the UK in the Eurovision competition. She has a powerful voice and plays the ditzy Elle with energy and passion. The choreography consisted of very energetic and slick dance moves and Anthony Williams should be commended for his work, along with Helen Petrovna who plays fitness instructor on trial, Brooke Wyndham. Her skipping routine and how she manages to perform is impressive! David Barrett who plays Emmett is very endearing. Bill Ward who plays the lecherous Professor Callaghan, has an impressive background in theatre and it shows.

Former EastEnders actress Rita Simons is a revelation as the salon owner Paulette Bonafonté; she is a pleasure to watch and lights up the stage with her comedic timing and is the star of the show! Her singing voice is surprisingly incredibly strong and clear; her performance of “Ireland” is mesmerizing. There was also a dog that was part of the cast- who wouldn’t listen to instructions, but Rita took this in her stride and it added to the comedic value.

This is a feel-good production is very pink, upbeat and funny! The songs are hilarious such as ‘Is he gay or European?’ with accompanying fairies on roller skates and ‘Ireland’.

This production was true to the film (Bend and Snap) with a few extras thrown in. Yes – it’s a bit silly, but I left the show feeling uplifted and with a smile on my face. This show is not political, nor are there any profound messages which is exactly what I wanted – a light escape! To enjoy this all you need is a sense of humour for an enjoyable evening.

The Wimbledon theatre itself is lovely and conveniently located less than a 5-minute walk from Wimbledon Overground/Underground station with plenty to do in the area.
