Andrew Lloyd-Webber's extraordinary record-breaking, smash-hit musical Cats is at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford for a two week run and I was lucky enough to go along and see it.
This has got to be the most amazing performance I have ever had the pleasure of watching, from the twinkle of the first light to the last note played it was completely fantastic and breath-taking to watch. I have never seen such a flawless performance from a cast, the makeup & costume department did a fantastic job of making each cat individual, this was also emphasised by the casts individual style/movement & personality they put into each of their roles. Each “cat” stood out with their own unique style/movement but also had the ability to come together perfectly to make it such a powerful, emotional & totally amazing gripping musical.
The special effects & the orchestra were also outstanding and I loved the way the show wasn’t restricted to just the stage, they cleverly used a combination of special effects/lighting & acting in different areas/levels of the theatre which added even more amazement/drama. There were also moments during solo performances where they had you so focused on a certain area/performance that the other “cats” had managed to slink/sneak/climb onto the stage without you realising.
The whole show was dramatic/gripping/emotional/believable & performed perfectly but the most memorable part for me has got to be the performance of memory in Act two by Grizabella & Jemima, this was so moving & powerful that there was a standing ovation.
I would definitely go and see this again and would tell anyone who hasn’t seen it to go and experience it for themselves.
