A new musical

Monday 20 to Saturday 25 May 2013

Opera House, Manchester

Aaron Sidwell (Eastenders), Verity Rushworth (Emmerdale) and Matthew Wycliffe (Jersey Boys) lead the cast of Carnaby Street, a new musical set against the backdrop of London’s West End in the Sixties – its iconic clubs, trendy fashions and eccentric characters – and packed with classic hits from the time.

Carnaby Street tells the tale of Jude, a working class boy from Liverpool, new in town and armed with nothing but his guitar and his dreams of fame and fortune.

Former Eastenders star Aaron Sidwell takes on the role of Jack.  Aaron’s theatre credits include Loserville – The Musical (West End)and The Prodigals (Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh). He has also appeared in the films Blood Army and The Nephilim.

Playing Penny Lane is Verity Rushworth, who played Donna Sugden in Emmerdale on television and as Penny in Hairspray in the West End, and as Maria in UK tour of The Sound of Music, including an acclaimed run at the Palace Theatre in Manchester in September 2011.

Matthew Wycliffe, willl play Jude, the idealistic musician who travels down to London to follow his dream of stardom.  Wycliffe’s previous credits include Bob Gaudio in the hit West End show Jersey Boys and touring the world as Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story.

Also appearing in the cast is Tricia Adele-Turner (Legally Blonde, Blood Brothers, We Will Rock You) as Jane, Mark Pearce (Ghost – The Musical, The Blues Brothers, and Bugle Boy) as Wild Thing, Paul Hazel (Avenue Q, Desperately Seeking Susan, The Lion King) as Lily the Pink and Hugo Harold-Harrison (Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Fame, Grease) as Arnold Layne.

The show explores the Sixties as a time of hope and freedom and will feature hits from the era including Keep On Running, Twist and Shout, You really Got Me, Mustang Sally, Sweets For My Sweet, Go Now, Shout, Born To Be Wild and many more.

Universal Music will be releasing a companion compilation album which will also include recordings of original music used in the show on 22 April.

Carnaby Street is produced by Carl Leighton-Pope, who has worked in the music industry since 1972, signing and managing acts including Dire Straits, Simple Minds, Journey, Huey Lewis, Styx, Bryan Adams, Bonnie Tyler, Van Morrison and Michael Buble. He has been developing Carnaby Street for 16 years.

Carnaby Street is directed by Bob Tomson, whose West End credits include Blood Brothers and Dreamcoats and Petticoats, and designed by Matthew Wright (La Cage aux Folles, Evita).
