The fabulous cast of the Calendar Girls – The Musical began their run at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow last night (11 June 2019) to a full house audience.
Based on the true story of John and Angela Baker and the Woman’s Institute (WI) in Cracoe, a small village in North Yorkshire, who gained overnight fame by producing an alternative calendar to raise funds for Leukaemia Research after John’s death.
Their story was made into a film then a play before Tim Firth and Gary Barlow collaborated to write the musical version which is directed by Matt Ryan and opened in Leeds in 2015.
Set against the backdrop of the rolling Yorkshire dales, Chris (Rebecca Storm) has another of her ‘great’ ideas- a nude calendar to help Annie (Sarah Jane Buckley) raise money for a sofa for the visitor’s room at the hospital where her husband John (Phil Corbitt) passed away.
Chris enrols her fellow ladies, Annie; single mum, Cora (Karen Dunbar); Ruth (Julia Hills) whose husband is cheating then leaves her; Jessie (Lesley Joseph), a retired headteacher and trophy wife, Celia (Vanessa Grace Lee) to star in the calendar.
Each of the ladies from Knapely Woman’s Institute has their story cleverly woven through the musical, one second the tears are slipping out the corner of you eye and then next, tears of laughter are rolling down your face! It is a real emotional rollercoaster!
The show has many funny moments but the photoshoot where the actresses bare all was hilariously but tastefully done!
The King’s Theatre is located in Bath Street in Glasgow’s city centre. It is a short walk from Buchanan Street although the area is well serviced with public transport and there is also on-street parking close-by. The theatre in traditional but comfortable with a friendly atmosphere and helpful staff.
