Last Friday, a friend and I decided to go for an evening meal at the new Brewers Fayre at Meridian Point in Cleethorpes, (North East Lincolnshire). We had a quick browse of the menu online and I was pleased to find that it is possible to book a table online too. The pub is very easy to find, being right next to Cleethorpes Golf Club and a stone’s throw from Pleasure Island theme park and the seafront. There is ample free parking in a well lit car park and the building itself is very modern looking and gives a good first impression. The pub is wheelchair accessible (two disabled parking spaces right by the door) and has an outdoor seating area and garden, which I imagine will be nice in the summer.
We were greeted by a friendly waitress who showed us to our table by the window. The pub was busy, with over half of the tables filled, so there was a good atmosphere. The tables aren’t too close together like they are in some restaurants and the whole place has a spacious feel. There was plenty of room for prams and wheelchairs should it be needed. The tables were spotless and the floors looked reasonably clean, considering it was 7.30pm.
We were tempted by the ‘Chef’s Counter’, which is a buffet-style all you can eat option, serving different themed meals each night between 5-8pm (including themes such as Mexican, Italian, and Curry). On a Friday it is fish and chip night which we didn’t fancy, so instead ordered from the main menu. There is enough variety for anyone to find something they will like, with a wide range of meal options including classic pub meals, fish meals, pasta and salads or steaks. I had a quick look at the kids menu for future reference and found it offers the usual pick and mix style meals (chicken nuggets, sausages and pasta, with side orders of beans, peas, chips or mash). I also noted that they have a lot of special offers on weekdays between 12-5pm, such as 2 desserts for £2.50.
We placed our orders at the bar and ordered drinks – the bar person seemed to have a good knowledge of the drinks available when I asked for a glass of wine. My friend had a refillable soft drink and was shown how to use the self-serve machine by a member of staff. I used the W.C. whilst waiting which was clean; I also noted a separate baby changing room, something I always look for as a lot of the time the facilities are in the women’s’ toilet – not very good if a male parent is out by himself with the baby!
Our starter came within five minutes of ordering. We had the combo feast for two (garlic mushrooms, chicken goujons, king prawns and cheesy garlic bread) with added bbq chicken wings. It was all hot, tasty and the portion size was generous – we could have easily split it between a group of four! The main course came 5 minutes after we finished the starter – I had the fish pie and garlic bread which I enjoyed – it had a nice smoky flavour and plenty of fish pieces. The garlic bread was a bit too much for me to finish, but tasted good. My friend had a medium rare T-bone steak which was cooked just how she liked it, but lacked a bit of seasoning, and the accompaniments were fine. We had room for dessert, so I ordered the treacle tart with ice cream, and my friend had a chocolate sundae, which was a visual feast! My dessert was the best part of my meal – the ice cream was creamy and the pastry sweet and crumbly. It was a nice sized portion, not too big to end the meal on.
Throughout the meal, we were approached a few times by members of staff, who checked if the meal was ok and if we needed anything. We were made to feel as though nothing was too much trouble. The staff made friendly chit chat with us (and other diners), which was pleasant. The staff clearly enjoy their job and are a credit to the place.
Overall, this was an excellent night out and very good value. I look forward to visiting again during summer, probably with my children as it is very suited to family dining. I highly recommend this pub: an average price for an above-average experience!
