We went along to the Royal & Derngate in Northampton to watch Blood Brothers on Tuesday 7th November. The Royal & Derngate is a lovely Theatre in the centre of Northampton. We had fabulous seats and a great view of the stage.
The show tells the story of a mother faced with giving up one of her twins at birth and the resulting twists through life those boys fate takes them. From the off, I was riveted by the choices Mrs Johnstone, played so wonderfully by Lyn Paul faced. I almost immediately felt her pain faced with the doing the best should could with the hand life had dealt her and her family. Lyn Paul, wow, what a fantastic voice. She was truly outstanding and was indeed the star of the show. The story set in Liverpool shows two families one struggling with multiple children, low income little in life to celebrate, apart from avoiding the milkman or the rent man, the other living opulently with no money worries, but childless. Faced with no husband and an already large family she is talked into giving her employer Mrs Lyons one of her new born twins.
In amongst the sadness there is much humour. Mikey, played by Sean Jones, was certainly standout and totally believable at playing a seven-year-old! The show has a narrator, Dean Chisnall, who also had a fabulous voice. Loved Linda, played by Danielle Corlass, full of energy and also a great voice.
The whole cast deserved the standing ovation they received they were all truly fabulous. Although a sad story I was totally hooked and couldn’t believe when it came to its sad ending. I would almost certainly watch this show again and can definitely understand why it’s a favourite of many. The cast had me in the palm of its hand for the whole show, a show you should most definitely put on your bucket list. Grab your tickets it’s touring into 2018 across the UK.
Tickets cost from £18 to £35.50 (booking fees may apply).
