Being environmentally friendly is very important to me and my family. For so long plastic has been overused and discarded. These days people are much better informed and there are so many amazing plastic free alternatives available. We have switched to shampoo bars and bamboo toothbrushes to cut down on our plastic use. Another recent swap of mine is to use bees wax wraps instead of cling film. There are some beautiful designs available which I’ve purchased and they can be reused. However until now I had not known it was possible to create your own bees wax wraps until I was sent a kit that includes everything you need to make your own. This seemed fabulous to me as someone who enjoys arts and crafts and making homemade items.

The Make Your Own Bees Wax Wrap kit is from Oakdale Bees. The Oakdale Bees team are passionate about bees and the environment. They own an apiary on the edge of Royal Windsor Great Park surrounded by a wild meadow haven and natural hedgerows. They have a range of plastic free, environmentally friendly gifts including natural beeswax candles, bees wax wraps, beeswax wood polish, make your own seed bombs and a children’s pack. Whoever you are shopping for and for whatever age you will find a lovely gift that has been handmade in Windsor.

The Make Your Own Bees Wax Wrap pack includes everything you need to create three large wraps. The pack arrived beautifully packaged in a cardboard box sealed with a ribbon and bee wax seal. Inside the box is the natural beeswax, organic tress resin and organic jojoba oil in special blocks. Also, organic cotton fabric in three beautiful designs, large sheets of greaseproof paper and Alice wooden handled brush for applying the wax. The box also contains a pack of bee, bug and butterfly friendly meadow seeds and a planting guide and tips booklet, a Bee Happy postcard and the instructions for making the wraps.

The instructions are surprisingly simple to follow. The step by step guide is clear and easy to follow and also includes photos. After heating my oven I worked my way through each step beginning by melting the wax hexagons and then using the natural bristle brush to brush the wax on the fabric. I began with a gorgeous bee and strawberry patterned piece. I placed the baking tray into the oven and after only four minutes in the oven and then a further four minutes drying time my first homemade plastic free wax wrap was ready! I felt so proud of myself. I then made the next too which were equally lovely bee and honeycomb patterned fabric. The three wraps turned out fantastic and are just perfect for wrapping up my homemade cakes and bread.

The Make Your Own Bees Wax Wrap pack makes an ideal present for any occasion all whilst spreading the bee love. It’s also a lovely item to treat yourself too if you enjoy getting crafty like me. We also enjoyed planting our seeds as a family in the garden. Hopefully we’ll attract more bees soon when the flowers start to bloom.
