Last night I took my mother along to see the opening night of Anything Goes at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre.
We arrived early so had a pre-show drink in one of the 3 coffee/drinks bars in the theatre. We took our seats and the lights dimmed and we were ready for our nautical adventure.
Climb aboard for this pleasure cruise packed with timeless Cole Porter hits. Luxury ocean liner the S.S America sets sail for England with a cargo full of colourful characters. Anything Goes tells the tale of stowaway Billy Crocker (Matt Rawle) and his desperate pursuit of Hope Harcourt the beautiful debutante fiancée of English Aristocrat Lord Oakleigh. But, the road to love is never simple as we are introduced to raunchy ex-evangelist turned nightclub singer, Reno Sweeney (Debbie Kurup) who herself holds a torch for Billy, the comedy is provided by gangster team Moonface Martin (Hugh Sachs) and his sidekick Erma (Alex Young) who are trying to make a getaway.
Packed with great song and dance numbers such as It’s De-Lovely, Friendship, I Get A Kick Out Of You, Blow Gabriel Blow and the title song, Anything Goes, this show is guaranteed to get your toes tapping. Combine the talent of the cast with the visual spectacle art deco set, stunning costumes and a healthy dollop of maritime mayhem and you’re in for a de-lovely evening.
We had a great night and can highly recommend this show. Featuring a full orchestra and a cast of 25 it is definitely something to see. A musical tale of romance and hi-jinks on the high seas.
Once again the staff at the Mayflower gave a warm welcome to all their customers at this wonderful theatre.
Tickets cost from £32.50 to £42.50.
