A Witch In Winter by Ruth Warburton Review

Reviewed by Catherine Briercliffe

I love to read all kinds of books, especially detective and mystery. This book seemed like a good read from the back page description although it was a little different to what I normally read.

This is about a girl (Anna) who moves to another state with her father, with her new friends she finds a witch craft book that they start to dabble with.

Putting a spell on a boy (Seth) to fall in love with her works, but she wants to rid the spell because of trouble it is causing, so she reads the book more and causes all kinds of mayhem with storms and other things.

She befriends a girl (Emmaline) and her family who tell her she is a witch like they are but she refuses to believe.

The books story is about what happens from then on, a war between other witches, getting rid of the spell, other spells being cast, hurt and love followed by a happy ending.

I found once I started to read the book I didn’t want to put it down because I wanted to know what happened next. It was an easy read book, kind of like a spell bound love story with a twist.

I would definitely read other books from the collection, as this was the first one I’ve read.

I would recommend.

A Witch In Winter follows Anna Winterson who moves to the town of Winter with her father. She was raised in London so everything about Winter is strange to her including the spooky run down house her dad is renovating.

Unbeknown to Anna the house is a Wicker House, a house that is protected by magic and whose residents were once witches long long ago.

Anna’s dad does his best trying to fix up the old house and finds a burnt book in the old bread oven in the kitchen. This book soon starts to cause problems for Anna and the community of Winter.

She starts at the local school Winter High and she soon catches the eye of Seth Waters the local trouble maker known well by the police for his ‘bad behaviour’. Anna is gutted to learn that Seth is dating the bitchy Caroline and decides to leave her feelings towards Seth alone. She soon makes friends with Prue, Liz and June and soon starts to settle into her new life.

Anna’s dad is called away one night and Anna suggests a sleepover with her new friends at her house and she shows them the burnt book her dad found.

The girls soon realise that it is in fact a spell book and decide to try a love spell as a few of the group are desperate to be noticed. Anna and her friends do the spell and as they are Anna suddenly thinks of bad boy Seth. Nothing immediately happens so the girls laugh it off.

Monday morning and the girls go back to school and things don’t quite seem right. Seth has dumped Caroline as he is in love with Anna, Caroline is furious and decides that Anna needs a taste of her own medicine and attacks her in the school grounds. Anna is then warned by the mysterious Emmaline that whatever she and the others did they need to stop it before it affects everyone. Anna is thrown by Emmaline’s comments and decides have it out with her and Emmaline tells Anna that she is a witch. Anna is dumbfounded by the news but it soon becomes crazier when Emmaline tells Anna that she is also a witch and that she has great power. After the initial shock Anna decides the best thing to do is to try and undo the spell her and her friends did but the consequences are disastrous to say the least and the Ealdwitan (the witch council) realise that Anna has something they want and attempt to recruit her. When she declines their offer they set about trying to harm the ones Anna loves. First her father, then Seth. Anna realises she needs help and calls on Emmaline and her family to help her. A huge battle of witchcraft soon commences but who will survive? What will happen to Winter? Is Seth really under Anna’s spell or is he really in love with her? Read it and find out

Although I wasn’t chosen to review this book I went out and brought it as the title really drew me in. I am a huge fan of supernatural stories and couldn’t wait to get stuck into it.

I read this book in 2 days and was completely transfixed by the story.

Ruth Warburton has written a wonderful and imaginative story which really draws you in.

I enjoyed the book so much that as soon as I had finished it I went online and pre-ordered the follow up book A WITCH IN LOVE.

A fantastic plot which is gripping, realistic and magical.
