On Saturday morning I received an early morning delivery from Sponge Online Cakes.  Three cakes were delivered by 8.30am and were packaged really well.  The boxes were taped together very securely, there was no chance they would become separated in transit.  There was also a THIS WAY UP notice in red on every box.  The delivery driver left them in my secure porch.

Once family were round and we had finished our Sunday roast we decided to sample the cakes instead of having our usual dessert.

The first box we opened was a Chocolate Brownie which was large enough to provide eight portions. Sponge say they use natural oils and flavours for their bakes and on the box it also states they proudly use British Ingredients.  They also stated ‘Our bakes are lovingly handmade in small batches’.

The first thing my eldest granddaughter usually does is to check the ingredients as she has Coeliac Disease.  To her delight this Chocolate Brownie turned out to be Gluten Free. She then saw it actually said Gluten Free on the back of the box! She was quite excited which means she could safely eat this Chocolate Brownie.  She cannot eat products containing wheat, oats, barley etc.  If she accidentally consumes any of the things mentioned it makes her extremely ill for several days.  Most shop bought cakes and products contain wheat which means she cannot have them.  She does miss out on some things, but with care and lots of reading of labels showing ingredients she can manage it successfully, she doesn’t do too badly.

There was a tube of white icing and some sugar stars, tiny balls and lollipop sticks included with the Chocolate Brownie, it could be decorated!  The two teenagers excitedly took the chocolate brownie out of it’s wrappings, the younger one allowing the coeliac to handle the actual brownie.  They were like two small excited children trying to decide what design they could put on the brownie.  First the tube of white icing supplied with the brownie needed the end cutting off and to be put nozzle down in a cup of boiling water to soften the icing.

Once the outline of their design was drawn by the eldest of the two in icing, the younger one started to add creative touches and filled in the details with yet more icing, sugar stars and balls.  I was quite impressed as to how their design turned out. They then had the tasting ceremony for the Chocolate Brownie.  The texture and taste were both great and as the brownie was large enough to be cut into eight there was plenty left. The part they most enjoyed even as teenagers was being able to decorate this Chocolate Brownie!

The tasting ceremony was followed by the two of them picking off all the icing, sugar stars and balls from the top of the remaining Chocolate Brownie leaving it naked again!  Still there is plenty of white icing left in the tube and more stars should they wish to decorate the remainder again!  The Chocolate Brownie was Best Before 11.12.22 so was good for over a week from delivery.

If you would like a fun afternoon decorating and eating a Chocolate Brownie from Sponge Online Cakes I can recommend this.  I think younger children would be even more excited than the teenagers.

Sponge do a variety of cakes according to their online website, some of them quite unusual.  For example a Red Velvet Snowball Pinata, Trifle Cake, Spiced Orange and Cranberry Cake and a Mince Pie Cake to name a few.

Prices vary depending on the chosen cake and size.  The Trifle Cake and Spiced Orange and Cranberry Cakes start at £16.75 to serve eight, rising to £26.50 each to serve 16.  The Red Velvet Snowball Pinata to serve 8 and the Mince Pie Cake to serve 16 being £26.50.
