It’s September, that time of year when you’re starting to maybe think a little bit about Christmas shopping, but also probably have one or two people on your list, both kids and adults, that you just don’t know what to get for them. I’m never very organised at all when it comes to the dreaded Christmas shopping, and also really struggle to choose simple gifts that will still be enjoyed by the recipient, and not just chucked to one side coming boxing day morning.
So when I was given the chance to review the card game Dobble: Marvel Emoji, I jumped at the chance as I wanted to see if this fun looking little game was going to be a suitable gift for those difficult to buy for people who you just want to give something nice, but perhaps not spend loads. We have played the standard version of Dobble several times so we knew the concept already. It is actually one of the games my kids will play without arguing, and one that I quite enjoy without having to understand (and explain!) many complicated rules, so we were looking forward to playing this version.
The concept of Dobble is deceptively simple. You have 55 cards, each with a number of picture symbols on, and all you have to do is match a symbol on your card with the one on the table. Easy, right? Wrong! There is always a matching symbol between any two cards even though sometimes you can stare at your card for ages and not see it, so it’s a matter of being the quickest off the draw, and finding the right symbol. With the standard Dobble the images are fun icons such as a moon, stop sign, tree or car. With the Marvel emoji version, the images are stylised Marvel characters and symbols so you might find Spiderman, Thanos, Thor, Venom or even Groot, amongst many others.
We don’t know many Marvel characters all that well, just the few really obvious ones like those I’ve mentioned and Ironman or Dr Strange, however that didn’t stop us from playing the game! If you don’t know the names of the characters and don’t want to spend time learning them then just make them up! We were calling out things like “winky lady”, “red skull man” and “blond haired guy” which still worked and made it a bit sillier! The game does come with a leaflet giving the names of all the characters so you can easily refer to that if you’d like to, or just make it up as you go along like we did!
The booklet also has rules for 5 different versions of the game which are all really fun to play. You can play versions where you give cards to others and try and end up with the least at the end, one where you try and get the most cards, or a quick draw one where you are just trying to match symbols on one card. Either way they all rely on observation and speed, and you always end up laughing (mostly with frustration when your 11 year old beats you hands down at spotting the matches!). The game comes in a handy tin, so you can easily store the round cards, and not lose them everywhere when you’re not playing. It’s also easy to take away with you for a quick game on holiday or on the go to keep the kids amused!
A great little buy for kids and adults alike, for Marvel fans and Marvel “I know a few character” types too. It is suitable for ages 6+ and playable from 2 to 8 players so can really suit the whole family for such a small game, taking around 15 minutes to play for each round you want to do. Simple to learn, quick to play, this would be a great addition to anyone’s games cupboard.
