Yorkshire Provender Summer Soups Review

Reviewed by Nia Lock
Soup is one of my all-time favourite foods so I was delighted to try some of the Yorkshire Provender summer soups from Waitrose which can be served either hot or cold. I make soup for my family all through the winter but in summer I don’t seem to have the time. I like Yorkshire Provender soups because their limited-edition flavours are always something new and unusual. I always find them tasty and well balanced.

The first limited edition summer soup by Yorkshire Provender that I picked up in Waitrose was an Edamame and Avocado Vichyssoise. Being a vichyssoise which is traditionally served chilled I wasn’t surprised to see on the label it can be served cold as well as hot and so I tried it both ways and found it was lovely chilled on a hot day which makes the whole idea of soup enjoyable whatever the temperature. This soup is just the right thickness and has a light and delicate flavour which I found more pronounced when served cold. The texture of the soup is pleasingly silky due to the avocado which is quite unusual to find in soup but makes for an interesting and nutritious addition. The pot it comes in can be used to heat it in the microwave but I prefer the saucepan method as detailed on the pot.

I also enjoyed the limited edition Fresh tomato soup with basil and balsamic, this was a richly coloured soup with a deeper flavour than the more delicate vichyssoise, for me the flavour of the red pepper really came through and gave the soup a zingy freshness which I really like. This soup I preferred hot and found that it was complimented by some crusty bread and strong cheddar.
Both the soups I tried were totally vegan and gluten free which was clearly marked on the labels and both are well balanced nutritionally. I will certainly choose them again on my next visit to Waitrose.
