Sheffield Lyceum is located in the centre of Sheffield, about 5-10 minutes walk from the train station. It has a number of car parks nearby and on street car parking. The theatre is modern, with very helpful and approachable staff.

I visited the Lyceum Theatre last night to see the stage production of Ghost. The movie is a firm classic and everyone knows the infamous pottery wheel scene and accompanying song. It’s a perfect romantic weepy film and I was interested to see how it translated to a musical, but in all honesty, I prefer it as a film.

The set was brilliantly constructed, blending seamlessly from one scene to another and utilized lighting and smoke to create different atmospheres and I particularly liked how the train scenes were created. There did however, appear to be a few difficulties with sound that I’m not sure was created by the production or the theatre itself. Any slightest bit of bass noise caused a clattering effect to the front left side of the auditorium. Think what a herd of elephants stampeding over a metal floor would sound like and that’s pretty much what I heard throughout most scenes with the slightest bit of bass. It meant that scenes that should have had a big impact left me feeling irritated and annoyed.

Sound issues aside, the actors were tremendous, conveyed emotion well, sang beautifully, and Andy Moss who plays Sam was a very animated singer. The songs were good but a lot of them seemed a bit bland to me. Although sung very well by the talented cast, they seemed a bit wishy washy and without substance.

The highlight of the performance for me was Jacqui Dubois as Oda Mae Brown. She was hilarious with perfect comedic timing throughout.

All in all, Ghost was an enjoyable show but not one of the best I’ve ever seen.
