I visited the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford to watch Chicago, The Musical. The theatre itself is less than 10 minutes walk from the train station (Bradford Interchange), and there is a good sized NCP carpark just 5 minutes walk away. It really is a lovely venue, with a modern foyer and bars on two levels. The staff were chatty, and we didn’t have to wait long for service at the bar. The actual auditorium is stunning, with two tiers set above the stalls and a number of balcony boxes. The seating was comfortable, with ample space.

The show tells a tale of late 1920’s Chicago, centred around murder, jazz and corruption. Roxie Hart (played by Hayley Tamaddon) is on murderess row in the Cook County Ladies prison along with the infamous jazz performer Velma Kelly (Sophie Carmen-Jones). The pair clash instantly, but with the help of the much sought-after lawyer Billy Flynn (John Partridge) and the Prison Matron “Mama” Morton (Sam Bailey), they strive for fame and stardom whilst using their beauty and femininity to manipulate their way to freedom.

The cast were polished to perfection. Tamaddon was natural in the role of Roxie, and provided a likeability and quirky humour to the role. Carmen-Jones maintained a sassy-aloofness throughout which was captivating, and Partridge oozed charisma and charm in the perfect role for him… and wow what a voice! The biggest surprise for me was Sam Bailey. Her singing was faultless as you would expect, but her American accent and acting ability were superb. She owned the stage and went down a storm with the audience. The supporting actors/dancers/singers (these people could seriously do everything!) entertained from start to finish, their energy did not falter and I just wish that I could have jumped up there and joined them.

If you are not familiar with the show, be prepared for the slightly provocative costume design on both the men and ladies. However it does compliment the tale of sex, jazz and getting away with murder (literally), and just creates a sultry excitement.

Overall, the cast and the band were outstanding and together they kept a smile on my face throughout the performance. No-one put a foot or note wrong. This musical has less dialogue compared to some, but the story is easy to follow through fantastic music, lyrics and acting, and this seems to keep the pace flowing. The songs are pure genius; the Cell Block Tango and All That Jazz will have the hairs standing on the back of your neck, there are a few laughs in a couple of the numbers, whilst Mister Cellophane contrasts this with a sprinkle of emotion from a character you cannot help but adore.

It is an absolute must see show in a beautiful theatre. Even if you have seen it before, like myself, I would absolutely urge anyone to watch it again just to experience it with this amazing cast of performers. Outstanding music, choreography, drama and costume… 5 stars.
