I was delighted to have been asked to review Hairspray The Musical at Milton Keynes Theatre. I took along my 12 year old daughter; we were both very excited, as the film Hairspray is one of our favourites.

The cast line up was great. It starred the talented Claire Sweeney, who played the part of Velma Von Tussle, and also the very funny Matt Rixon, who played Edna Turnblad.

It is always a pleasure to visit Milton Keynes Theatre. The theatre is situated in the heart of Milton Keynes, right next to lots of shops, bars and popular restaurants. It is well signposted and really easy to find. The car park is directly in front of the theatre; parking is free after 6pm.

The theatre has a lovely bright and spacious foyer, with a stunning piano bar just on the left as you walk in. The theatre was busy, and buzzing with people of all different age ranges, from children to the elderly. We noticed merchandise being sold, and it all seemed reasonably priced.

We collected our tickets, and were shown to our seats by a friendly member of staff. We were pleased with our view, and our seats were very comfortable, with plenty of leg room.

From the minute the curtain went up, we were fixed. The songs were great; the singing and dancing throughout was brilliant.

There were many funny moments that had the audience laughing lots!

The eye catching colourful costumes were fabulous; we could tell straight away it was going to be a good show.

In the interval we popped to the toilets, and were pleasantly surprised how clean and tidy they were.

Before returning to our seats, we stopped for some refreshments, and were served by a welcoming member of staff. It was busy, but the staff were working hard to get everyone served as quick as possible.

Hairspray was great from start from finish. Freya Sutton played Tracy Turnblad brilliantly! She looked and sounded exactly like her character in the film.

We were especially blown away by 2005 X Factor contestant, Brenda Edwards, who played Motormouth Maybelle. Her voice was simply stunning.

The cast were all amazing!

The dance routines were flawless. And not forgetting the live band playing on stage throughout the whole show; they did a brilliant job!

Our favourite part had to be the finale; the cast had everyone clapping, dancing and thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Then the whole audience rose to their feet to give the cast a well-deserved standing ovation.

We certainly were not disappointed; we had a brilliant night. We have seen many shows and this certainly has to be one of the best by far!

It’s a fantastic show; suitable for all the family. I would definitely recommend booking tickets ASAP!
