On many occasion I have walked past the relatively new Barburrito in Cardiff’s St David’s Centre and admired its relaxed approach to eating. However until this weekend we haven’t ventured in. I was a little nervous not least because we were taking with us our 3 year old twins but also my taste of Mexican food has never progressed much further than an old El Paso fajita made at home. I was keen to try the famous burritos of Barburrito but a little unsure of exactly what to expect.
The restaurant itself is a small venue however does provide seating for those wishing to have an eating in dining in experience. As soon as we entered you were able to see above the serving counter the different burrito choices that could be made. My greatest difficulty in the first instance was making a decision. As a contact lenses wearer I often struggle to read at distance and so was struggling a little to read my options. Immediately this was noticed by the serving member of staff who provided me with a paper copy of the current menu. This is a simple touch but one that showed a company that had considered the varying needs of its customers. The burrito was made to order at a serving bar with all the lovely ingredients there for you to see and choose from. I opted to try a small classic burrito, now the term small is a little deceiving there isn’t anything small about this type of burrito. I watched as the server filled a lovely warm wrap with Mexican rice, mild bean sauce, chicken, peppers and onions, salsa, cheese and sour cream. My husband being the growing boy decided that the loaded burrito was the best choice for him. He received all the deliciousness of my burrito but instead of chicken a double helping of spicy shredded beef. The first thing we both noticed about both the burritos was how big they were. Now my small burrito was big but the loaded burrito was honestly mammoth. I wasn’t sure what I would choose for my 3 year old twin boys. I considered splitting an adult meal maybe a naked burrito, basically a burrito without the wrap. However whilst chatting to the server she mentioned that they did do children burritos, however these aren’t on the advertised menu. These were smaller with less ingredients however still they were a very generous serving. Both boys loved the burrito experience almost completely clearing their plates. I love to encourage my children to try new and exciting foods and Barburrito was a great place to take them to sample something very different to what we’re all used too.
As a venue for a lovely meal for two Barburrito is an ideal place. It’s atmospheric, it’s relaxed and everything my husband and I would enjoy. As a stop of lunch venue again I would visit again and again the food is good, it’s hearty and it offers great choice. The venue staff too are friendly and helpful. But there are some, not criticism, but suggestions that would make this much more appealing to me. Myself and my husband love to include our children on our eating out dining experiences especially ones we wouldn’t necessarily encounter at home. Although the restaurant provides highchairs and a child’s version of the burrito it doesn’t include the children’s meals on the main menu boards seen by customers choosing to eat at the venue. I do wonder if families were to visit would they look to the menu, see no children’s option even though it is available, and choose to eat elsewhere because of it. I really believe that’s a shame as I know the food is great not just for adults but also for kids. I do also wonder if one of the options for children could also be a smaller portion of the naked burrito. As much as little hands like a wrap many too like a bowl and a spoon and I think to provide this two simple options could really help make this a much more accessible restaurant for the whole family.
We would definitely return to Barburrito and give the restaurant a fab 4 out of 5.
