City of Women by David Gillham Review

Reviewed by Cora Leslie

“Never judge a book by its cover” this saying has never been more relevant! City of Women appears dull and dreary and even the synopsis is quite off-putting as it makes the book sound rather boring.

Despite this I took the plunge and started to read the book with little hope of being entertained by it. I am extremely pleased that I gave it a chance. The main characters of the book are feisty, brave women but there are male characters that intrigue us as well.

Based in Berlin during World War II this book is very emotive as we learn about the lives of the women left behind while their men are at war. We also learn of their astonishment when they realize that they are not winning an amazing victory but are in fact in danger of losing.

The history in the book lends to its appeal but it is extremely well written and I found myself completely absorbed in the character’s lives.

Ignore the cover and read the book; you will not be disappointed
