Space Penguins Star Attack by L A Courtenay Review

Reviewed by Lee-Anne McCarthy

Superhero adventures are just our cup of tea and Space Penguins: Star Attack! is a funny take on just such an adventure. Jack is an avid reader and was massively excited to be receiving this book to review.  The story mixes humour and adventure in an extremely exciting and engaging way.  The story tells of the adventures of the spaceship called the Tunafish run by the Space Penguins. These fishy superheroes take on baddy robot seals led by the not so nice Dark Wader. The character names like Fuzz Allgrin, Splash Gordon and Dark Wader had Jack hooked from the moment he read the blurb on the back.  So I’ll let Jack give you his review from here.

The front cover was nice. It had a really cool picture of a penguin on. I definitely wanted to read it when I saw this picture.

It’s funny. I liked it best when one of the space penguins tells the baddy he looks like a remote control wheelie bin. I would tell my friends to read it because it’s so funny. I liked reading about all the characters at the beginning.

I liked the pictures in the book too. They were really good and the person who drew them was very clever.

I would give it a 5 out of 5. It’s awesome.

From a parents perspective this book was a really engaging both for Jack and myself. The book is divided into very manageable chapters that are ideal for an early reader or for shared reading with a parent. The language was clear and at times really aspirational. It gave us a real chance to talk about the meaning of some of the words and really extend Jack’s language development. He laughed a lot at numerous parts of the book. Proper big belly laughs and even now tells everyone about the bits that are the funniest. The illustrations were very good however I would have liked to see a few more throughout the book.

I give Space Penguins: Star Attack! a very good 4 out of 5.
