Discover the Awesome World Review

Review by Michelle Llabani
First Impressions – this book has a very bright cover which was an instant hit with both my son (aged 7) and his friend (aged 9). The pictures on the front cover give an excellent indication of the facts they will find inside. The book is separated into 6 sections: Earth’s Wonders, Amazing Nature, Body Science, Speed Machines, Thrill Seekers and Unearth History. There are lots of pictures inside, and facts are attached to the pictures giving more information. It is bright and engaging, if a little frenetic.
My son was very excited to get started on some awesome facts; however this is where the problems started. He started on the first topic, first page, but quickly got frustrated. The vocabulary is sometimes complex and well above the de-coding abilities of a very good 7 year old reader. My son gave up very quickly, claiming it was just too difficult and he wasn’t going to read it. Thinking it may well just be aimed at an older audience (the Miles Kelly website does state an age range of 9-99) I passed it to my 9 year old neighbour, who also struggled and quickly lost interest.
I decided not to push my son to read the book, leaving it on his shelf to see if time would again pique his interest and as the week has gone on he has indeed dipped in and out of the book, sharing a few odd facts he has learnt with me and his friends.
In conclusion I would say the book is both engaging and educational, appealing especially to boys, but readers under 10 years old will need to have the support of an adult when reading. The cover price of £9.99 is a fair price to pay for a book full of information and excellent graphics, however could I request a simpler version for my fact loving 7 year old, same topics, just simpler words please?
