Recently my daughter, nine year old granddaughter and I had a 4pm booking at the Moor Mill Beefeater, Radlett.
This Beefeater, and the next door Premier Inn are set in beautiful Hertfordshire countryside. There is a duck pond and duck house with lots of ducks waddling around, and plenty of outside space for the warmer evenings. Our nine year old was quite concerned about the ‘Beware of the Crocodile’ sign and wanted to know exactly where it was!!!
The Moor Mill restaurant is on three levels. There were just couple of tables on the ground floor with the remainder on the upper two levels. As we arrived the guests from an 80th birthday party were just leaving. The ‘birthday boy’ had to negotiate a short flight of stairs complete with his walking frame from the first level to get to the exit!
We were shown to our table on the upper level which had part of the mill workings in the middle of the floor space ~ the remainder of the mill workings were on the bottom floor but surrounded by a protective screen. We could see the waterwheel through the screen although it didn’t look as though it worked.
Our drinks order was taken and our waitress arrived to take our food order. When we asked her advice she was very knowledgeable about the types of steak and how they were best served. We chose sirloin, mine medium and my daughter’s medium-well, with chips and salad from the main menu. We declined the offer of steak butter and went for peppercorn sauce and black and blue sauce instead. My granddaughter originally asked for fish fingers but when I jokingly suggested she have fish and chips the deed was done!!! We ordered her fish and chips from the ‘Early Bird’ menu for £4.99 with her starter and dessert £2 extra each. We all decided on deep fried mushrooms for starters.
The mushrooms arrived very quickly and the nine year old had the mushrooms, (which she doesn’t like) removed from the breadcrumb coating, (which she loves). She then ate the deep fried breadcrumb coating with tomato ketchup!! Oh well, we got the unwanted mushrooms!!!
The main meal arrived and we asked for vinegar and French mustard. My steak was delicious, so tender and tasty, as was my daughter’s. The salad was very fresh and crisp with no droopy bits. The nine year old had a huge piece of fish from which we cut off both ends and gave her the middle. She loved it!!! None of us finished our chips and we declined second portions!
Desserts ~ my daughter ordered a huge fudge sundae which contained chocolate brownie pieces, marshmallows, chocolate covered sweets, ice cream and fresh cream, whilst my granddaughter asked for a chocolate brownie without the ice cream. I jokingly said I would have her ice cream with chocolate sauce as they no longer had plain ice cream on the menu. I was told it was still available at the till, so I ordered an ice cream with chocolate sauce.
My granddaughter couldn’t finish her brownie, but my daughter managed and enjoyed all her sundae whilst I savoured my ice cream.
We asked for the bill, when it came I was shocked to find my ice cream had cost £3.50 compared to the huge fudge sundae my daughter had which was just 75p more at £4.25. It then took a long time for someone to come back to us so we could pay the bill.
There was a 30th birthday party taking place on our floor, the children were allowed to run around the restaurant chasing both each other and balloons and getting very close to the diners whilst their parents carried on chatting and ignored what they were doing.
Our meal was delicious, our waitress excellent and the restaurant is in a beautiful setting.
Just be warned there is a short flight of stairs to the first level of the restaurant and a second flight to the top level. The 80 year old managed the stairs with the support of his family. The upstairs toilets were out of order which meant using the ones in the basement.
I couldn’t decide whether my granddaughter was relieved or disappointed that we didn’t see the crocodile, but we saw plenty of ducks and were able to identify which type they were as there were helpful boards, with information about the different types, by the pond.
I can thoroughly recommend this restaurant!!!
