Book Review: We’re Going on a Christmas Hunt
As soon as We’re Going on a Christmas Hunt arrived, my two children, aged five and seven, were eager to dive in. The book came quickly, neatly and professionally packaged, with no excess materials, which was a pleasant surprise. Both copies were in pristine condition and beautifully presented, making them ideal as a Christmas gift or stocking filler. The cover immediately caught my children’s attention, two children with their mother walking into a magical adventure with key Christmas imagery, and they couldn’t wait to find out what festive surprises lay inside.
The story itself is a charming Christmas twist on the much-loved classic We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. My children recognised the familiar rhythm and repetition straight away, which helped them engage quickly and join in with the words. The singsong, rhythmic style made it a joy to read aloud together, and my five-year-old especially loved joining in with the repeated lines. It’s clear the book is designed with early readers in mind, the large, clear font and repetitive phrasing make it an excellent choice for practising phonics and blending sounds. I could easily see it being used in schools or early years settings to support reading skills and topic work around Christmas.
The illustrations are vibrant and clear, filled with festive warmth. What particularly stood out to me, and to the children, was the clever way the story unfolds both in the children’s imagination and in their home. In addition to the nativity scenes, there are also smaller scenes which show a mother telling the Christmas story to her children as they play with a nativity set, which helps bridge the excitement of imaginative play with the meaning of Christmas. My seven-year-old commented that it was “like we could see what they were thinking,” which is a lovely way for children to begin understanding imagination and storytelling.
In terms of longevity, We’re Going on a Christmas Hunt is definitely one to bring out year after year. It’s festive without being overly commercial, and it captures the magic and wonder of the season perfectly. It is also suggested at the end, it being adapted for a classroom nativity or used as a shared reading text in the run-up to Christmas, something teachers and early years practitioners would find valuable.
At its current price, I think the book offers great value for money. It’s high-quality, engaging, and versatile, equally suitable as a family read, a classroom resource, or a thoughtful Christmas gift.
Overall, I’d rate We’re Going on a Christmas Hunt four out of five stars. My children thoroughly enjoyed it and have already asked to read it again, always the best sign of a good book. I’d happily recommend it to parents, teachers, and anyone looking for a joyful, interactive story to share with young children during the festive season.
