Jessika Wojcicki is a Leicester-based artist, illustrator and designer. She originally trained in Graphic Design and then spent 5 years working in film, tv commercials and theatre. More recently she has concentrated on being an illustrator and children’s author.
She explains: “The Very Long String began in 2018. I had a lot of self-directed projects going on as part of my university degree and a brilliant tutor, Kathryn, who always said to me ‘anything goes’ and allowed me to explore every corner of my own creativity. Creating a children’s book is something I really wanted to have a go at. A lot of my research at the time was around mother-daughter relationships. My mum has always instilled ‘talking’ into me and my brother as kids. When I was little, I’d sit on the floor in the kitchen with my bunny and talk to her all the time. Flashforward to university and she was always on the other end of the phone. It was that golden creative lightbulb moment of hey I’ve got it! How do I translate a supportive relationship into a children’s book? I took the idea of a ‘phone’ and translated it into the simple concept of a string. A lot of our connections are maintained over the phone, that one person will always be there to guide you wherever you are.
I first started by creating the character, this one is inspired by little Jess. I used to have wild blonde curly hair my mum put in a top not in the 00’s. She began from a quick scribble of pen and watercolour, and I stuck with that for the very first copy of the book. For me, the illustrations are what tell the story, I write through images and post -it notes and then think about how I can really pull on some heartstrings.”
