What The Ladybird Heard is one of Erin’s favourite books so we were really looking forward to this production at the Victoria Theatre in Halifax.

Having never been to Halifax, I found the theatre quite easy to locate. There are several car parks and on-street parking in the vicinity of the theatre, all of which have a very reasonable pay and display charge. We parked in the Bull Green car park and it was a short 2 minute walk to the theatre.

The box office was easy to locate and the staff were all very friendly. There was a small selection of merchandise to purchase, including copies of the book and a sticker book of “What The Ladybird Heard”. The staff were helpful at directing us to our seats which were of a good size with adequate leg room and the theatre was clean and quite light.

The performance started very promptly at 13.30. The set is simple but effective and the costumes are quite basic. The cast are interactive with the audience from the outset and we watched as they turned the stage props into the farmyard animals. The story follows the plan of Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh to steal the farmer’s fine prize cow and the ladybird’s plan to stop them. There is lots of singing, dancing, moving props around on the stage and changing lights which helped keep the attention of the children.

Erin absolutely loved this show. She was singing, clapping and dancing in the aisles throughout the 55 minute production and I was amazed it managed to keep her attention for the duration of the performance. I would say though that some of the audience was getting restless towards the end of the show.

Overall it’s a perfect first theatre experience for a small child and I will recommend my friends to take their toddlers and pre-schoolers to see this production.  I was impressed with the ease of finding this theatre and I would definitely visit the Victoria Theatre in Halifax again.
