Fame at the King’s Theatre Edinburgh Review

23-27 October 2018

Reviewed by Emily Crombie

Fame opened at Edinburgh’s King’s Theatre last night (23 October) and runs until Saturday 27th October before continuing to tour throughout the UK until October 2019.

The Fame phenomena was developed by David De Silva as a film, TV series and the musical which premiered in 1988. The current tour is directed and choreographed by Nick Winston with music by Steve Margoshes and lyrics by Jacques Levy.

Set in New York at the New York High School of Performing Arts in the 1980’s, Fame follows the ups and downs of the class of ’84 on their journey of self-discovery. Many coming of ages themes are touched on… romance, drugs, parents, self-confidence, ambition- themes still relevant and can be identified with today. The character’s stories are cleverly woven together to produce a flowing show that allows the audience to relate and follow their progression and development.

Miss Sherman played by Mica Paris blew the audience away with her rendition of These Are My Children… what a voice! The closing number led by Miss Sherman and Carmen (Stephanie Rojas) brought the audience to their feet to dance along to the iconic musical hit, Fame. Other musical numbers include I Want to Make Magic, Hard Work, Bring on Tomorrow and Mabel’s Prayer.

The comic character, Joe (Albey Brookes) had wonderful comic timing and expression through-out. His input certainly makes the age guidance of 12 years plus advisable!

The King’s Theatre is situated on Leven Street within the Bruntsfield area of the city. It is accessible with public transport and there is on-street parking in the vicinity. The theatre itself is traditional in style. We sat in the Dress Circle where the seating was comfortable and the visibility excellent.

The show is fast moving and well balanced with energetic dance routines and touching musical numbers.
