This Is Not About Me Transfers To Soho Theatre Following Award-winning Edinburgh Fringe Run
GUEST POST
Following a sold-out, award-winning run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, THIS IS NOT ABOUT ME transfers to Soho Theatre this spring. The critically acclaimed debut play by Hannah Caplan will run in the theatre’s Upstairs space from 25 March to 18 April, ahead of a transfer to New York later this year.
At the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the production received strong critical attention, with The Stage describing it as “meta but moving… a romcom with fangs that tears the genre open” in a four-star review.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT ME is a sharply observed two-hander that follows Grace and Eli, whose relationship spans friendship, intimacy, rupture and repair. In the wake of their separation, Grace — a writer — attempts to make sense of what happened by writing a play about their relationship.

As she reconstructs their shared past on the page, memory and authorship begin to blur. What is true, and what is imagined? Whose version of events takes precedence? As Grace shapes the narrative, elements of their relationship start to slip out of her control, raising questions about ownership, perspective and the boundaries between lived experience and art.
Blending live typing, film and multimedia with an intricately hand-crafted set, the production places the creative process centre stage. Audiences witness the act of writing unfold in real time, as scenes shift and the past is revisited, revised and reframed. The staging reinforces the play’s exploration of how stories are constructed — and who gets to construct them.

The production examines who “owns” a shared history, and the personal cost of turning lived experience into art. Through the evolving dynamic between Grace and Eli, the play explores the tensions that arise when private relationships become public narratives.
Hannah Caplan’s debut play has resonated with audiences for its contemporary subject matter and inventive theatrical approach. The London transfer marks the next chapter for the production following its award-winning Fringe run, bringing the show to one of the capital’s leading venues for new writing.
Soho Theatre’s Upstairs space provides an intimate setting for the 70-minute production, allowing audiences to engage closely with the unfolding story and its shifting perspectives.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT ME runs at Soho Theatre from 25th March to 18th April at 6:45pm (not Sundays).
