The packaging immediately stood out, bright and playful fish‑and‑chip‑style packaging with bright yellow tokens visible through a fish‑shaped cut‑out. The packaging is clearly designed to reflect the family seaside theme. It felt fun and family‑friendly from the moment I picked it up, and I think it would make an excellent gift for kids or for casual game nights. The box highlights the simple, fast‑paced gameplay, which made me eager to see how it would play around the table.
Opening the box, everything was neatly arranged, although in transit the instructions had been pushed in front of the tokens. The set was small and had a professional feel. Inside were 40 colourful yellow tokens to represent the “chips,” two dice and the instruction leaflet.
We do travel a lot, and this kind of simple but effective game is exactly the sort of thing we like to take away. Unfortunately, even though the box isn’t bulky, there’s no “takeaway” pouch included to enable a grab‑and‑go game. The dice themselves feel sturdy and well‑made, with clear icons that fit the theme nicely. The tokens were round, which caused me to wonder why, as I would have expected them to be chip‑shaped — long and thin — rather than round tokens.
Once we started playing, the game flowed quickly. The instructions were easy to follow, explaining clearly how to play. Essentially, the game is as follows: upon rolling the red dice, if it lands on a fish, my eight‑year‑old then screams FISH as loud as he can, and you grab a yellow dice to try to roll a chip. If it lands on a seagull, everyone else’s chips are fair game. The turns were fast, light‑hearted and full of little moments of luck and laughter.
The game is constantly moving, and we got louder and louder, swapping dice, stealing chips and generally having a laugh. It’s the kind of game where you don’t need deep strategy — just roll, react and enjoy. I was only able to play the game this time with just two players, but I’ve already booked in a game’s night for next weekend. My eight‑year‑old son absolutely loved it. The volume levels got higher and higher, with shouts of FIIIIIISH being heard all across the neighbourhood!
The game offered great replayability for a light family dice game. The randomness keeps each round feeling different, and it’s easy to play multiple games in one sitting. The price is around the same as I would normally pay for a quick, fun game like this, so I feel that the price is bang on.
Overall, I was impressed with Fish ’n’ Chips: The Family Dice Game. The gameplay delivers exactly what it promises, and it creates fun, silly and hilariously competitive moments around the table — especially when it comes to stealing chips from each other. My son found this hilarious! It’s a shame, as mentioned before, that there wasn’t a pouch included to transport it without the box, or that the “chips” weren’t actually shaped like chips, instead being round discs.
This game would make an excellent stocking filler for a family that loves games, for those who just need an introduction to an inclusive family game, or as a great Secret Santa present. It’s affordable, fun, and I would definitely recommend it.
