Children’s love of slime is endless. It seems like it has been around forever, but manufacturers keep finding new and exciting ways to play with it, and this is one of the new ideas from Canal Toys.

Inside the box, there are:

* 1 × recipe guide
* 8 × bags of slime powder
* 8 × bags of decorations
* 1 × mixing tool
* 1 × mixing tool
* 1 × magic key
* 3 × stackable storage pots
* 1 × sheet of fairy stickers
* 1 × star filled with glitter
* 1 × fairy slime factory

It is very easy to make the batches of slime. Fill the bowl with cold water up to the mark, add your choice of the eight different-coloured slime powders and decorations (you can follow the suggestions in the recipe guide or create your own), give it all a little mix, and it soon starts to thicken into slime.

To add a bit of fairy magic, put the bowl of slime into the “factory” and close the door. When you turn the magic key, the factory chamber produces magical sound and light effects around the slime bowl. By squeezing the star on the tip, you can add a sprinkling of glitter. This all adds to the magic.

Our seven-year-old absolutely loved this. She’s already a big slime fan, but being able to make it herself is even more fun. It’s all very easy to do, and a child could manage it without too much supervision. There’s very little mess, too. (My tip here is to use scissors when opening the little packets to avoid spilling the contents.)

Once made, the slime can be stored in the three stacking pots. As this kit makes eight batches of slime, it would have been nice to have more pots to store it in, but I just wrapped the others in cling film. The fairy stickers are designed to fit on the outside of the stacking pots.

Once all the supplied ingredients are used, we will still have fun using this little factory for our own concoctions.

It’s a great way for children to have sensory fun and experiment with different colours and textures. In the words of our seven -year-old “it’s so satisfying”.

A few things to note: if you add too much water, the slime will become very sticky and difficult to get off your hands. If you are careful to fill it to the measured line, it will be the perfect consistency. The factory chamber requires 3 × AA batteries, which are not included.

The QR code on the box takes you to a different product. I was expecting it to show us how this toy worked, but, to be honest, it was easy to see how it worked by following the pictures on the box.

So Slime DIY makes a super Christmas gift. It is suitable for children aged 5 and over, is priced at £14.99, and is available from major toy stockists, including Smyths.
