The Tiger Lillies interpretation of the modern classic Lulu was brought to life at the Northern Stage in Newcastle tonight! The story takes us through the short life of Lulu from the streets of Berlin, to London via Paris and Cairo. I was very interested to see whether they would portray Lulu as a tragic victim of abuse, or whether she played on the weaknesses of the men around her and used this for her own social gain.
The show is a cast of only four. Laura Caldow who plays Lulu gives a fantastic interpretative dance based on ballet. She dances throughout the show in conjunction with music and at times incorporating drama into her performance. The Tiger Lillies use an array of instruments to bring to life the story of Lulu including the accordion, drums and percussion instruments, at times the fantastic use of music is so intriguing you forget you are at the theatre and could well be at a musical concert!
The set itself is one of the best things about this production. It is an ever changing scene from London to Paris all using virtual sets, the London set is so realistic you feel you could be stepping foot into Victorian England.
The direction is also well thought out and well fitting to the show. The Tiger Lillies are based in the same position throughout the show which keeps your eyes focused on the main attraction of the show; Lulu. However there use of props and facial expressions bring to life there part in the show.
I feel that the Northern Stage was a very good place to stage the show – the acoustics are great, and the audience are very close to the stage meaning you almost feel part of the performance. It is also very central in Newcastle which again adds to its appeal.
I would definitely say this show isn’t for the easily offended – the language used in the songs throughout the show is very colourful, and the dancing and costumes at times are provocative. However given the subject material of Lulu, and the way it was delivered this just adds to the intrigue of the show. I would highly recommend this show!
