My Mum is a huge Osmonds fan and we grew up listening to their music so when I heard there was a new musical about them, aptly called The Osmonds – A New Musical we knew we had to see it. We were thrilled when we heard it would be playing at the fantastic Opera House in the centre of Blackpool and were really looking forward to seeing the show.
The Osmonds – A New Musical tells the story of the Osmond’s family rise to fame. Born in Utah to parents George and Olive, the Osmond brothers Alan, Wayne, Merrill and Jay initially started performing as a barbershop quartet in the late 1950’s to raise money to buy hearing aids for their two older brothers. They were then asked to appear on the Andy William’s TV show, gaining a regular spot which ultimately propelled the young brothers into stardom. As their career progressed they were joined by brothers Donny and Jimmy and sister Marie with the family taking the UK by storm in the 70’s. Guided by their father George, an ex army sergeant who raised the family in a militaristic style, they had strong principals of faith, family then career which stood the family in good stead as they became global superstars. Unfortunately, despite their early success one bad decision cost them everything.
Jay Osmond, superbly played by Alex Lodge, acts as narrator providing us with insights into the highs and lows of life as The Osmonds. From the minute the boys arrived on stage singing the opening number, One Way Ticket to Anywhere we knew we were going to have a good night, the talent and energy of the cast was outstanding and whilst the theatre wasn’t full there was a real party feel in the area that we were sitting.
With 50 years of music to fit into the musical, the show features an amazing 35 songs so there are bound to be a few favourites in there. We particularly enjoyed Marie (Georgia Lennon) singing Paper Roses, she has a fantastic voice and we really couldn’t tell the difference between her and Marie she was so good! Thank God I’m a Country Boy was another fabulous moment in a great musical.
All the cast were outstanding but special mention has to be made of the actors that play the younger Osmond brothers, they all had great voices and we especially liked the one singing Long Haired Lover from Liverpool.
With hit songs aplenty you really must go to see this show. With the audience at Blackpool on their feet for the last few songs, singing, dancing and having a great night out it was plain to see Osmondmania was certainly back in Blackpool again!
