With the arrival of summer my kids love nothing more than to go to our local farms to pick our own fruit. With three children all each armed with their baskets I always end up with more fruit than I need so a few years ago I decided to use the excess to make some jam. In the past I have always just boiled my fruit without using a strainer as I have never felt the need to bother as I always felt it was just too much bother and I always questioned if buying a strainer was worth the money, if it would just take up more space in my kitchen or if it would be a gadget that I would use just once and would then sit in my cupboard for the next few years.
When the opportunity came to review the Tala Jam Straining Kit I jumped at the chance especially as jam making season was upon us.
This jam strainer comes in a flat small box which can be easily stored in any kitchen cupboard and what makes this more appealing that once used this is easily dismantled and fits back within the original box.
Ease is the first thing that comes to mind with this product. It is easy to assemble, the nylon bag easily fits over the stand as it has a elasticated opening and the stand and can hold a couple of pints of stewed fruit. Once your jam is at the correct temperature and consistency all that is required is to pop the fruit in the bag and leave for about an hour. The mesh of the nylon bag is of good size and for the first time in my jam making history I have managed to make a jam that is free of seeds. The only down side I have found with this product is that you can’t adjust the spread of the legs so you are a little limited to the size of the jar/pan or bowl to use to strain the fruit in to.
This product is great value for money priced at £6.99 it is one of the cheapest straining kits on the market and the nylon bag which is used for straining can be re-used time and time again. Its simplistic design does not hamper this product and due to the fact it can be stored back into its small box means that I have easily found the space to store this product. I would happily recommend this product to both beginners and seasoned jam makers alike.
Overall I would give this product 4.5 out of 5 with the only downside being that you are limited to the size of the container you are using to strain the jam into.
