Jesus Christ Superstar at the King’s Theatre Glasgow Review
Jesus Christ Superstar

The cast of Jesus Christ Superstar gave a stunning performance that certainly justified the standing ovation it received from the full house at the King’s Theatre, Glasgow last night.
The show is one of the three collaborations between Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice (the other two being Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and Evita).
As they were unsure of the shows future and there was an element of scepticism due to the shows biblical content, the duo released songs from the show as an album which was a major hit in the US and Jesus Christ Superstar hit Broadway in 1971.
Jesus Christ Superstar incorporates many of the key biblical event leading up to the Crucifixion – Judas’ betrayal of Jesus to the Roman’s, Jesus’ last supper with the Disciples, Peter’s denial of knowing Jesus and the Crucifixion.
The staging and lighting were dramatic and very atmospheric and Jesus being lifted on the cross is one of the lasting images that will stay with me.
Glenn Carter made a charismatic Jesus (but I really wanted him to have a beard to fit with my vision of Jesus!) but the voice of Tim Rogers, Judus, what can I say, breath-taking. Rachael Adedeji of X-factor fame added her sweet tones to the show as Mary Magdalene.
Although the show is fairly serious the scene in King Herod’s boudoir was hilarious and Tom Gilling gave everything to the role!
The King’s Theatre is a beautiful theatre with lots of detail, the seating is comfortable and the visibility is good. The staff were pleasant and helpful. It is situated on Bath Street which is within walking distance of both the rail and bus stations. There is on street parking in the area too.
Tickets cost from £23.65 to £49.15 (plus £2.85 transaction fee).
